Welcome to Sound Financial

People, philosophy,

We strive to be excellent stewards of what our clients have entrusted to us. It is important to understand WHY we operate the way we do.

Who We AreOur Team

Who We Are

Stewards, disciplined

defenders, guardians … yes!

As with many great stories, ours began with a couple of friends with a dream. Way back in 1982 Sammy Dean and Danny Matthews began their careers in the financial sector. They shared the belief that when people had better financial education, they could understand their finances better and make informed decisions. By 1993, they formalized their partnership and formed Sound Financial Strategies Group.

Chris McAlpin

Chief Executive Officer

Since 2004 Chris has been helping clients manage their assets and plan for retirement. This pursuit of serving clients and planning for their futures has led him to his current role as Managing Partner and CEO of Sound Financial Strategies Group. In these roles he has led the firm into the future as they grow in both profit and purpose, and find new ways to serve clients, to make a generational impact.

Chris studied accounting at Arkansas State University and graduated from the University of Mississippi. He received an MBA from Mississippi College, and studied finance at King’s College in London. Chris has completed course work through the College of Financial Planning.

Chris is passionate about his faith and family and enjoys spending time pursing both! He also enjoys reading, hunting, exercise, and being outdoors. Chris serves at his church as a deacon, teacher, and committee leader, as well as a volunteer chaplain at a state prison. Recently, Chris has been working with Gospel centered economic development opportunities that are designed to serve those in poverty.

Joel Holden

Chief Operations Officer

Joel has been a leader at Sound Financial since 2009. After graduating from Mississippi State University with a degree in Risk Management, Insurance, and Financial Planning, Joel began a career of asking “why and how”. A shift change in the financial advisory industry began a few years back, Joel led the charge in transitioning a 24-year-old IBD firm into a hybrid Registered Investment Advisor. These “why” questions, have led others in our industry to ask “how”. Joel has not only led change at Sound Financial, but also assisted 7 other firms across the country to make similar transitions.

Now as a Partner and the Chief Operations Officer of Sound Financial, Joel leads our team to provide the best operational tools and technology available in our industry. Joel is continuing to ask “why” in ways the firm can be more transparent with our clients and establish strategic partnerships that allow Sound Financial to provide more control for the firm and a better experience for our clients.

Joel and his family are active members at their church where Joel serves as as deacon. He enjoys hunting, fishing and pretty much anything else that involves being outdoors.

Advisory Benefits

An environment where you and your clients can thrive.

As an advisor, you may feel you have achieved a good level of success, but do you sometimes feel as if you’re stuck in the wrong place? Maybe you’re at a firm where you wonder if you’re doing what’s best for the client or what’s best for the firm? Are you forced to compete with the people you sit next to instead of working as a team? It doesn’t have to be that way!

The regulatory changes in our industry will create a clear distinction between advisors that serve the client and those that serve something else. If you’re interested in doing what’s best for your clients, creating a success story for yourself, and making a real difference in other’s lives, there’s a great opportunity for you!
